Safety Guidance for Visitors to Halwell
Airfield
We ask that all visitors read the following safety
guidelines when visiting Halwell Airfield.
Ø Please make sure you have been fully
briefed by a club member on the safety procedures when moving
around the airfield.
Ø Beware of aircraft with engines running,
propellers can be difficult to see when they are moving.
Ø When approaching aircraft with engines
running make sure the pilot knows you are there.
Ø Never walk close to propellers, you
can never be sure when the pilot may start the engine. The call
"CLEAR PROP" indicates that a pilot is about to start
his engine.
Ø Children should always be supervised
whilst on the airfield.
Ø When not being accompanied by a club
member please stay in the designated visitors' areas.
Ø Smoking is strictly prohibited in
or around the hangars and all aircraft.
Ø Dogs must stay with owner on a short
lead, or tethered to an appropriate fence.
Ø Please park in designated parking
areas only or where directed.
Ø Please abide by the safety notices.
Accidents can be avoided.

SHFC Health and Safety Rules
All SHFC club members will be given a copy
of the clubs health and safety rules.
We would ask all members for the safety of themselves and others
to abide by the rules when at the airfield so far as is reasonably
practicable.
Safety of aircraft when on the ground
All pilots should carry out all general checks
and those laid down in their aircraft hand book before preparing
their aircraft for flight and starting the engine.
Aircraft engines should not be started in
front of or close to open hangar.
Aircraft engines should not be started outside
the area of the airfield or close to the entrances to the airfield
when the public are attending.
When starting engines pilots should be aware
of the affect prop wash may have on other aircraft and wings close
by.
Smoking is strictly forbidden in or around
aircraft at any time.
Refuelling of aircraft should only be undertaken
on the airfield and away from other aircraft.
All pilots should maintain good practice when
taxiing on the airfield.
Safety of aircraft when flying in the area
of Halwell airfield.
When taking off and landing at Halwell circuit
procedure should be followed at all times. (See attached)
When Halwell radio is active all pilots with
radios should contact the airfield for information before take
off and when approaching the area and wishing to land.
Hangar Safety
Any club member moving aircraft or using equipment
should take the utmost caution to avoid injuring themselves or
damaging anything in the hangars. Any serous injuries should be
reported to a committee member. This will allow the committee
to review the situation and make any changes that could improve
safety.
Smoking is strictly forbidden in or around
the hangars
Refuelling of aircraft is strictly forbidden
inside the hangars.
With the exception of the fuel in aircraft
no fuel is to be stored in the hangars.
General
When non-club members visit the field club
members are obliged give them a safety briefing, which should
include the dangers of propellers, how aircraft will move around
the airfield and appropriate airfield safety.
A safety Guidance card for visitors will be available in the caravan
No visitors should be allowed to enter the
hangars without a club member.
No cars should be parked on the airfield with
the exception of designated parking areas.
Children visiting the airfield should be kept
under control at all times.
Visitors should be asked to stay within designated
areas when not being accompanied by a club member.
Pilots are obliged when taking visitors on
flights to ensure they receive a full safety briefing on the aircraft
and how to behave in the vicinity of moving aircraft.
The safety of visitors is the responsibility
of all club members.
Fire extinguishers will be available in all
hangers.
All appropriate signs will be in place, this
will include: fire extinguishers points, first aid point, no smoking,
no entrance, no unauthorised personnel, caution and any other
signage considered necessary.
